Emma Barrett

Associate

Emma is a chartered psychologist with expertise in investigative decision-making, risk assessment and threat management, and criminal exploitation of digital technology. She has broad and deep expertise in developing and applying behavioural science knowledge to real-world problems.

As well as being an associate of Let’s Think®, Emma is Professor of Psychology, Security and Trust in the Department of Criminology at the University of Manchester, and Director of SPRITE+, the UK’s Network for cross-sector collaboration in digital trust, identity, privacy and security.

Before joining the University of Manchester, Emma spent more than two decades in the civil service, including more than a decade leading an internationally-renowned team of researchers working with law enforcement and security stakeholders. This work involved applying behavioural, psychological, and social science research to a range of defence, law enforcement, and national security issues, with a strong commitment to the development of the best possible scientific evidence to underpin policy and practice.  In 2010, she was awarded the OBE in recognition of her and the team’s achievements.
